The map is not the territory
Your beliefs are a map of reality. Check them against the ground.
The idea
Your beliefs are a map of reality, not reality itself. Maps are useful, but they leave things out and they go out of date.
Why it matters
When something surprises us, it is often because our map was wrong or incomplete, not because the world is being unfair. Good thinkers hold their maps loosely and update them when the ground disagrees.
The shift
From "I know how this works" to "Here is my current map, and here is how I will test it."
Try this today
Pick a belief that is driving a current decision. Ask: what evidence would change my mind? Then go and actively look for that evidence.
Reflection question
Which of my beliefs is a map I have never checked against the ground?
Write your answerPart of: Lead better
Keep going
Think backwards: inversion
Ask how you would guarantee failure, then avoid it.
Two-way doors
Most decisions can be undone. Sort them before you agonize.
The circle of control
Point your effort at what is actually yours to act on.
